Organize and rename your files with AI

A Downloads folder with 600 files, scans named IMG_2213. Ask in one sentence and let AI sort, rename and file them, on your own computer.

October 31, 2026

Everyone’s computer has one: the folder you don’t open because it’s a mess. Sorting it is simple and endless, which makes it a perfect first job for an AI agent.

One sentence, one folder

  • "Sort my Downloads folder into Documents, Images and Installers."
  • "Rename the scans in this folder by what they are and the date on them."
  • "Move every invoice from this year into Invoices 2026, one folder per month."
  • "Find the photos from the trip and put them in one album folder."
  • "Tidy up my desktop."

ands shows you the plan first: how many files, which folders it will create, and a few example names. You say go and watch the files move.

Renaming by what’s inside

File names like scan0012.pdf say nothing. ands can open each file, read what it is, and give it a useful name, like Electricity bill, March 2026.pdf. For a large folder, ask it to show you the first ten names before it does the rest.

Nothing disappears without you

Moving and renaming are changes covered by the plan you approved. Deleting is different: it’s always a sensitive step, so ands asks every time. If you say "clean up my desktop", it moves things into folders rather than throwing them away, unless you tell it otherwise.

Works on Mac and Windows

It works in Finder on macOS and in File Explorer on Windows, with your own folders, cloud-synced ones included. The download page has the steps.

Next steps

Once a folder is in order, keep it that way with a monthly sentence: "sort this month’s downloads". For more chores like this, see How to automate repetitive computer tasks.

Only if you ask, and deleting is always a sensitive step that waits for your click.

Yes. It can open a scan or PDF, see that it is an electricity bill from March, and name it that way.
